A German-Norwegian energy project wants to make Rostock a hub for the production of hydrogen from natural gas, so-called blue hydrogen. The German gas group VNG plans to build and operate a plant with a target capacity of 1.3 gigawatts in Rostock with an annual hydrogen production capacity of up to 230,000 tons, which would correspond to around 20% of the current hydrogen market in Germany.A final decision for the approximately one billion euro investment project should be made in 2025 or 2026, so production could start in 2029.A feasibility study is to clarify the outstanding issues.Together with the Norwegian energy company Equinor, natural gas from Norway is to be brought to Rostock through existing pipelines and processed there. In the process being pursued by VNG and Equinor, natural gas is split into hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The two companies plan to pump the liquefied CO2 into the seabed in Norwegian waters.According to the German gas group, “a base load supply with large quantities of low-CO2 hydrogen is achieved in this way in order to bridge and supplement the increasing supply of hydrogen from renewable energies.” This hydrogen should initially primarily benefit industry in eastern Germany. In addition to storing the carbon dioxide in the seabed, use in industry is also under discussion, and the feasibility study should also provide an answer to this.According to VNG, CO2 is used in fire extinguishing systems, as a coolant or in tire manufacture.By clicking on "Subscribe to newsletter" I agree to the processing and use of my data in accordance with the declaration of consent (please open for details) and accept the terms of use.I can find more information in our privacy policy. It goes without saying that we handle your personal data responsibly. If we collect personal data from you, we process it in compliance with the applicable data protection regulations. You can find detailed information in our data protection declaration.I agree that Vogel Communications Group GmbH & Co.
