The Thuringian cluster for water research, coordinated by environmental chemists from the University of Jena, will receive funding from the Federal Ministry of Research from 2023.The cluster is committed to sustainable water supply and cooperation with civil society on the subject of water.Research into new, forward-looking approaches to safe and sustainable water supply is being funded in Thuringia over the long term. The "Thuringian Water Innovation Cluster" (ThWIC), initiated by the Friedrich Schiller University Jena together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS and the Ernst Abbe University Jena, prevailed in the final round of the Clusters4Future competition and will be funded by the Federal Ministry of Research from 2023.This means that over the next nine years, up to 45 million euros in funding will flow into the development of new water technologies and research into how society is dealing with the increasingly scarce resource."With our cluster, we want to bring the successful basic research from Thuringia's universities and research institutions to social application and show how the small and medium-sized companies in the region can use the latest technologies to develop global market opportunities," says Prof. Dr.Michael Stelter. The chemist, who is the deputy head of the institute at IKTS and director at the Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry at the University of Jena and coordinator of the project, is particularly pleased that ThWIC has not been selected to fund a pure technology cluster: "Our projects are not just about about technical innovations for a more sustainable water supply, but also about cooperation with civil society.” Even if the topic of water is increasingly present in the media, there is often still a lack of convincing offers to convey water knowledge and to involve broad sections of the population in the upcoming upheavals in water management. The President of the University of Jena, Prof. Dr.Walter Rosenthal: “The success of the future cluster initiative shows the excellent cooperation between the Friedrich Schiller University and the scientific institutions and companies in the region. The funding is a strong signal for Thuringia as a science location and in particular for Jena.” Rosenthal described the collaboration between scientific water research, data science and sociology planned in the cluster as “a perfect example of the processing of scientific problems established in Jena that transcends the boundaries of disciplines and scientific cultures , which complements the large portfolio of sustainability research at the University of Jena".The more than 20 sub-projects of the innovation cluster deal with various aspects of sustainable water supply.A central area are new technologies for the analysis and purification of water."With the new generation of sensors developed in the cluster, a thousand times more data on water quality can be collected," explains the co-coordinator of the cluster, Dr.Patrick groom."For the first time, we can observe changes in water quality in real time and react much more effectively to pollution caused by micropollutants such as pharmaceutical residues."That is why it is important to “involve citizens in technology development at an early stage using new methods and to take their questions seriously.”By clicking on "Subscribe to newsletter" I agree to the processing and use of my data in accordance with the declaration of consent (please open for details) and accept the terms of use.I can find more information in our privacy policy. It goes without saying that we handle your personal data responsibly. If we collect personal data from you, we process it in compliance with the applicable data protection regulations. You can find detailed information in our data protection declaration.I agree that Vogel Communications Group GmbH & Co.
