As the Michigan high school sports season comes to a close, Saginaw-area athletes continue to put up impressive performances.

Tennis and track finished off their 2022 seasons Saturday, with the other sports heading into the final weeks of the season.

Fans can look over the accomplishments of this week’s candidates and vote for their favorite through 9 a.m. Friday.

Lani Bloom will run for Purdue next season, but the Ithaca senior left a memorable mark in her final high school track meet. Bloom won Division 3 state titles in the 800-meter run (2:11.86) and 1,600 (4:49.60). She also ran a leg on Ithaca’s fourth-place 3,200 relay team (9:46.45).

Frankenmuth junior Brooklyn Compau blew past the 300-strikeout mark for the season, leading the Eagles to a 5-0 record during the week, including a Division 2 district title. In a 10-0 win over Bullock creek, Compau threw a six-inning no-hitter, striking out 16 with two walks. She added a homer at the plate. In the second game, a 10-8 win over the Lancers, Compau earned a three-inning save, adding a double and homer on offense. She reached the 300-strikeout mark in a 13-0 win over a Cass City team ranked in the Top 10 in Division 3. She struck out 16 and allowed two hits, adding two hits offensively. In the district, Compau entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth inning, striking out the only batter she faced. In the final, a 10-0 win over No. 6 Clio, Compau struck out 10, walked two and allowed three hits in five innings.

After getting two hits, including a double in Ithaca’s 11-1 win over Lakeview in a Division 3 softball district semifinal, Davenport earned the win in an 8-4 championship-game victory over Central Montcalm. Davenport, who also had a hit in the title game, struck out seven and allowed no home runs in the complete-game win. It is Ithaca’s first softball district championship since 2013.

Dalton DeBeau blew away the competition to win the discus state title at the Division 2 state meet, taking first with a throw of 175 feet, 7 inches. DeBeau added a seventh-place finish in the shot put (49-7).

Laura Leiti led Dow to a fourth-place finish in the Division 1 girls tennis state finals. Leiti cruised through the No. 2 singles brackets to the final match. She beat Port Huron Northern’s Lily Van Howe, 6-1, 7-5 in the semifinal before falling to Elsie Van Wieren of Ann Arbor Pioneer, 6-0, 6-3, in the final.

Bridgeport senior Chaniya Madison made it a clean sweep, going 3-for-3 in the Division 2 100-meter state championships, missing only in 2020 when Covid canceled the season. She won the 100-meter dash Tuesday (:12.07) and ran a leg on Bridgeport’s state-championship 800-meter relay (1:44.14). She also ran a leg on the Bearcats’ second-place 400 relay team (:49.70).

Bryce Martin earned medalist honors and led Millington to a Division 3 regional championship at Verona Hills Golf Course in Bad Axe. Martin, a freshman, shot a 75 to lead all golfers as Millington also took first with 322 strokes to earn a spot in the Division 3 state meet Friday and Saturday at The Fortress in Frankenmuth.

Sanford Meridian finished sixth in the Division 3 boys state meet, with Dane Plichta piling up plenty of points for the Mustangs. Plichta won the 200-meter state title (:22.82) and finished second in the 100 (:11.26). Plichta also ran a leg on Meridian’s first-place 800 relay team.

Frankenmuth sophomore Payton Schafsnitz had a big week, helping the Eagles go 5-0 and win a Division 2 district title. She started with two hits and two runs in a 10-0 win over Bullock Creek, following with a two-run triple in a 10-8 win over the Lancers. In a 13-0 win over Cass City, Schafsnitz drove in two runs and scored twice. In a 10-0 district semifinal win over Birch Run, Schafsnitz hit a two-run triple, leading up to the 10-0 championship win over Clio. She went 3-for-3 with two homers and four RBIs.

Midland High went 4-0 during the week, including a Division 1 district championship. Before the tournament, the Chemics swept New Lothrop, with Grace Schloop earning the win in a 17-1 victory over the Hornets. Schloop allowed one run, two hits and no walks, striking out four in four innings. In the district semifinal over Bay City Central, Schloop powered the Chemics to the 13-0 win with three hits, including two homers, and five RBIs. Schloop earned the win in the title game, a 7-5 victory over Bay City Western. Schloop allowed five runs and five hits, striking out six in seven innings.

Michigan Lutheran Seminary junior Ava Slieff helped the Cardinals earn a 21-13 record. In her final doubleheader  of the season, Slieff scored Seminary’s lone run in a 2-1 loss to Birch Run in the opener, stealing second and scoring on a single. In the second game, Slieff threw a complete game, striking out five and walking none in a 5-2 victory. Saturday, she switched to track, where she competed in the Division 4 state meet. Slieff finished fourth in the 200 (:27.12) and ran a leg on Seminary’s sixth-place 800 relay team (1:51.55).

Brittney Sting has 14 goals this season for the No. 1 ranked Valley Lutheran girls soccer team. But her last goal was probably her most important. Sting knocked in a rebound off a shot from teammate Riley Karas, scoring the lone goal in Valley Lutheran’s district championship win over Saginaw Nouvel.
